Home Away From Home

If you look at the city behind us, the Yerba Buena rink where we skate is the building with the somewhat slanted gray roof. The trees are directly to the left of it, and the building is held up by red columns.

I often say that “skating family is the best family,” and here is another example to prove my point. About 3 years ago, I started traveling to San Francisco for work. I knew precisely one person who skated at that rink, and he and I were a little bit more than just acquaintances at that point.

Fast forward to today, and he has become one of my most cherished skating friends. In addition, I’ve met some truly wonderful people along the way, and I often get to chat with them during our early 6:00am practice sessions. One particular skater is L, whom you see pictured here. She and I skate in the same level, and she’s one of my inspirations. L recently passed her Adult 21+ Senior skating skills test (WOW!!!) and also won the Pacific Coast Sectionals event 2 years ago. Have I mentioned that she’s older than me? She’s truly a gem in every way.

I am so grateful for my home away from home and to have been welcomed with open arms. It’s comforting to have friends on the west coast to “go home” to when I travel to the Bay Area!

So much love for these humans!
