Back in the Harness
This last week has been challenging, skating-wise. I sprained my ankle while in New York City for work last week. I was attending an event and as we exited the auditorium, I did not notice that there were two steps down that I needed to take. I proceeded to walk forward and follow my team out of the venue and missed the steps. Despite stumbling down the two steps, I did not fall. I managed to catch myself and stayed somewhat vertical. In the meantime though, I sprained my ankle. It hurt to walk, and it especially hurt to turn my ankle a certain way.
On top of that, I have been attempting to break in new boots and blades. While I was practicing at the Skating Club of Wilmington, I noticed that my left ankle felt tender (this was the day prior to the missed stair incident). It turns out that my ankle had been rubbing against my new boot, and some skin had been irritated and come off.
So here I was, hobbling with a sprain and a skin abrasion on the same ankle (my landing side). That meant that I could not do much on my left side all week.
Instead of wallowing in self-pity, I wanted to share these exciting videos from the week before last. My pairs partner and I were able to find some time with our skating director to practice some throw jumps in the harness. The throw axel felt… easy (?) after trying a few in the harness. The throw double loop was a bit more labored and difficult, but it definitely felt better than it used to.
Take a look!
You’re doing great, Eva & working very hard to improve your skating. So sorry about your ankles. Life is hard when they are injured.
