Skating Fridays

Gold on Ice – Part 1

Gold on Ice

Last Friday, I had a very cool opportunity to attend a show called Gold on Ice. It was hosted at Ion Training Center near DC, which is a few hours away from me. Two of the Learn to Skate students in my class said they were going, and it got me thinking… maybe I could go too?

I shared the event details with two of my adult students, and I also shared it with some of my besties. One of them, who lives several states away, said that she would be interested in going. Somehow, the stars aligned, and I was able to get four of us to go. We got a hotel room, we got tickets, and we trekked to the show.

Little did I know that the seats we had picked out were better than the VIP on-ice section. Unbeknownst to me, our seats were right by the “tunnel” where the skaters would peek out to watch the rest of the cast perform. Gracie Gold was there in the tunnel before the show started, and each cast member would hang out in this tunnel during a quick break.

My friends and I took advantage of this opportunity and asked the skaters for their autographs (we came prepared) and even got some photographs.

Getting an opportunity to chat with these elite skaters was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We had great conversations with Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Keegan Messing. And we also got to talk extensively to Ilia Malinin’s dad.

All the skaters were so gracious with their time, and the event was extremely well-run.

Keegan Messing jumped onto the boards and did a backflip during the show. It was insane! A few other skaters also did backflips, and there was even one skater who juggled FIRE on the ice. Wow!

What I didn’t know is that the evening was going to get even better after the show concluded. Stay tuned for Part 2 next week!
