Sectionals Recap – Part 2

With my open free skate event behind me, I had a long day ahead. My pairs partner and I had pairs practice at 7:10am, and then I had a practice for my championship free skate right afterwards. When I looked at the list of skaters on our pairs practice ice, I didn’t see any. My partner and I talked this over, and we thought it would be best for us to spend about 10 minutes on pairs practice and for me to leverage the remaining 10 minutes for my championship event. The championship practice ice, which was right after mine, had at least 14 skaters, so it was going to be a mad house.

Sadly, more teams showed up for pairs practice so there were 6 of us on the ice. As a result, I didn’t get to practice my singles elements. We utilized the entire practice ice for pairs and laid out our program and worked on the individual elements.

Although we were the only entry in our event, we still wanted to skate well. There have been times when skaters have lost to the rule book in the 6.0 judging system when they are the only entry in the event. We definitely did not want to be THAT team.

I was a bit winded when we competed our program. After our flip-toe loop combo, my mind blanked very briefly and I got disoriented. Thankfully, I watched my partner and then quickly remembered what I had to do next.

Our elements felt pretty solid, and we skated well overall. Thankfully, we ended up in first place and didn’t lose to the rule book!

A few interesting things happened at the medal ceremony: 1) 1984 Olympic pairs champion Yelena Valova presented us with our medals, which was a bit surreal! 2) We were accidentally awarded the Championship medals that were supposed to be reserved for the Championship events (ours was not a championship event). We got to wear these on our necks for a good 10 minutes before the organizing committee realized their mistake and asked us to return them. (see photo above for the beautiful hardware!)

I am thrilled that we skated well and closed this chapter of this program on a high note. We will create a new program for the next time we compete. Any suggestions on music choices?
