New Years Invitational (Part 2)

New Years Invitational 2024

After rushing out of the NHL sized rink and changing out of my fuzzy reindeer costume, I had less than an hour to prepare for my freestyle event. There were only 3 skaters in my group, but I wanted to skate well. I put out less than stellar programs in my last 2 competitions and I wanted redemption. Badly.

I had been fully prepared and had been running clean programs up until this point. I had a good warmup but my camel spin felt a bit wonky. Perhaps it was because this rink felt like it was 30 degrees, so my legs and muscles stiffened. Since I wasn’t “feeling” the spin, I changed one of my features into one that was much easier.

My axels felt OK-ish, but I ended up under rotating both of them (one by less than a quarter and the other was more than a quarter turn). The rest of my jumps and spins felt OK.

After I got off the ice and put on a thicker jacket, I kept refreshing the results page to see how I did. Much to my surprise, I earned 30 points! I’ve been competing for about 10 years and have never broken the 30 point threshold. Today was my day!

I earned a personal best in PCS, which tells me that I’ve made improvements in my presentation and skating skills. While I didn’t earn a personal best in the technical score, I still skated the best I could given the circumstances (a quick change from a previous event, wintry conditions in the rink).

I am beyond the moon and super happy at how I did. Had I skated clean and to the best of my ability, I would have easily scored in the mid 30s. This makes me so excited!
