Pretty Fly
My skating besties and I competed recently. This is the same program that we skated in our rink’s holiday show. The premise is that my friend K and I are supposedly attending an Elton John concert. As the curtain opens, we see my pairs partner, who is clearly not Elton.
The music is “Pretty Fly For a White Guy” and then transitions into Elton’s “I’m Still Standing” as we de-nerd my partner.
We had a blast hamming it up and putting on a performance. Eventually, we came in 2nd out of 3. But, we did earn two first place ordinals, which tied with the first place team. But, one judge gave us a third place ordinal, which broke the tie.
None of us were upset though, since the team that won comprised of three older ladies (likely in their 70s or 80s). They were dressed up as the Roadrunner, Wile E. Coyote and a stick of dynamite. I believe their costumes were all handmade and their creativity was out the wazoo.
I also came back to the rink the next morning to coach two of my private students. One had a very bad back injury yet made it through her program and earned the first place medal. This was her second competition and she has placed first both times. I’m so proud of her!
My other student competed in a different event and it was her first-ever competition. She skated very well and did a great job emoting. She even earned two first place ordinals, but ended up placing third. One of my skating friends came up to her and complimented my student on her graceful arms. That comment really made our day, and I was almost brought to tears. I’m so proud of this skater too.
I can share videos once they are available. Thank you to the LOC for organizing this event, and we can’t wait to be back next year!
Hard to compete with dynamite and a coyote! You must be so thrilled to see your students skating so well–what a great role model you are for them!

We weren’t sad that we lost to the Looney Tunes trio. They were so incredibly creative!
