Eggbeater Spin

Did you ever notice that many spins in figure skating are named after food-related things? We have a pancake spin, a donut spin, a corkscrew spin and also an eggbeater spin.

I had a spin lesson recently and did not want to work on the spins in my program. Instead, my coach had me do an eggbeater spin – on both the forward scratch and backward scratch.

Lo and behold, she actually liked my backward version. Sadly, even though it requires a lot of core strength and flexibility, this position does not count as a difficult variation. But, it’s still cool to execute and fun to look at.

Here is my back upright eggbeater spin that transitions into a backspin.

Eva, I really like this position for you! Very cool and would be choreographically interesting!

It might work for a character or emotional performance. Sadly, it doesn’t get credit for difficult features so it wouldn’t be worthwhile for a freestyle program. 😢
