Video From My Competition
At long last – here is the video from the competition. My brand new program is set to the Mandarin version of Coldplay’s “Yellow” from the Crazy Rich Asians soundtrack and is performed by a gifted singer named Katherine Ho. If you’re interested in learning what the lyrics mean, check out this page (note that it is not a direct translation to Coldplay’s original song).
A few things that I wanted to share about this program:
- Director Jon M. Chu had originally reached out to Coldplay to use the song “Yellow” for the movie but was turned down. Then he wrote a heartfelt letter to the band and finally got their permission.
- Actor Constance Wu (who played Rachel Chu in the movie) wore a gorgeous yellow dress to the 2019 Oscars – read about her reasoning behind the dress here. My skating costume is inspired by her dress.
- I have been bullied and called many ugly names because of my Asian heritage. This program is about being proud of who I am, my background, and owning my Asian-ness. And not being afraid of being called yellow.
I hope you all enjoy this!

Wow! You look wonderful, especially in the spin combos. I love that song (I think I’ve seen Crazy Rich Asians more than eight times).
