Competition Recap – Day 2

Silver medal
Day 2 of the adult competition came around pretty quickly. I didn’t spend the night so had to drive back up to the rink again in the morning. My back was hurting after being in the car for so long. My teammates weren’t competing freestyle, so that meant that I was on my own.

The first face that I saw when I entered the building was a familiar one. It was a good friend from another skating club, and he welcomed me with open arms. When he heard that I’d be competing alone, he graciously offered to be my coach for the day and put me on the ice.

I pretty much isolated myself that afternoon so I could focus on myself and not get caught up in other distractions. Normally, I like to talk to other people, but then I lose my focus. This day, however, was all about me. I did my pre-competition warmup and felt pretty calm. I was second to skate and did not watch anybody before me (including the other groups of Gold ladies).

I went into my first spin and it felt good. During my second spin, I felt my tiara fly off my head. I kept going and went into my axel. It felt slightly off, and then I lost my bearings. I made up some choreography and went into my 3-jump combo and eventually finished the program on time. My spins felt good. The second axel felt underrotated, but otherwise, I was happy with my performance.

At the end of the day, I earned the silver medal and got a personal best score! However, I did get a 1 point deduction for a “costume malfunction” since my tiara came off. And yes, I am serious. After the 1-point deduction, I had the second highest score I’ve ever earned. I was thrilled! I earned 27.67, even with the 1 point deduction. That means that I really scored 28.67! Almost 29 points!

This competition is giving me a bit of a confidence boost. I know that I can score better since I made some silly mistakes. Anything is possible at this point!

Wardrobe malfunction! It sounds like the big leagues–I’m always impressed by how everyone just keeps skating on. Really, they should have given you extra points for poise. Congrats on your silver medal finish and what sounds like a really good skate (with improvisation, to boot!)

I don’t think the judging panel realized my tiara fell off until o skated over to pick it up. Nobody in the audience saw it until then!

Congratulations, Eva! That is wonderful to score a personal best, and way to go with persevering even after your tiara flew off. (It looks very nice with your pretty dress.) If you’re going to your Sectionals or to AN, I hope that gives you a big boost of confidence!

Thanks so much, Melissa! Yes, I am skating at both Sectionals and AN. You can bet that I will NOT be wearing a tiara at either competition!!
